START-UP BUILDING STRATEGIES: FROM AN IDEA TO LAUNCH (Expert Panel)

Ori Cohen: High level tips for entrepreneurs that are in pre-funding and immediate-post-funding stages of a technology start up. Practical ideas for VC fund raising and company setup are listed. For more information, feel free to contact Ori Cohen: orico@skyrider.com (PDF/PPT)

Abigail Johnson: Typically, most people think about public relations exclusively as a tactical activity designed to get "ink" for a company for very short term reasons. This presentation makes the the case that public relations and strategic communications is critical to a start up company from the beginning because it should be focused on establishing a unique, leadership position. With such leadership comes a halo-effect that benefits the company across the board and for the long term. (PDF)

Open Source Comes to Networking: Fusion or Fission?
When the Internet was first created, open-source infrastructure was the norm. Somewhere along the way, closed-source products started to dominate the landscape. Vyatta is working to restore the open environment and culture of the Internet's past by developing a line of enterprise-grade, open-source, network infrastructure products, including routers and firewalls. Allan will discuss the pioneering efforts toward delivering open-source networking products and solutions to the enterprise.

The Business Case For Agility:  The Lean - Agile Connection

Agile methods center on building systems a piece at a time. The reasons for doing this are typically centered around the challenges of running a project through a predictive process. Lean provides another compelling reason to deliver software in stages -- to give the most value to the customer as soon as possible. By delivering value in stages you not only give the customer value quickly, but you can use the process to not build things that aren't needed and to eliminate waste in the requirements/analysis phases of the project.

This seminar discusses these issues by presenting the main principles of Lean Software Development while illustrating why and how to deliver value quickly. It then briefly mentions what development teams must learn in order to do this in a sustained manner.

Management by Consensus – A Manager’s Guide to Scrum

Scrum is an agile, lightweight process that can be used to manage and control software and product development using iterative, incremental practices. Wrapping existing engineering practices, including Extreme Programming and RUP, Scrum generates the benefits of agile development with the advantages of a simple implementation. Scrum is practiced now at thousands of software companies world wide, and its adoption rate is continuing to grow.

This session provides a high-level introduction to Agile Software Development and Scrum. The first part of the talk will focus on what Agile is and where it came from. The second part looks at the Scrum methodology, which is a concrete implementation of the core Agile principles.

The Role of the Toolsmith

What is a toolsmith, and why is a more descriptive term than "build guy". "release engineer" or "configuration specialist"? Why is it a great idea to have a dedicated toolsmith in your company or project?

Where can you find good toolsmiths anyway? These are some of the questions we will discuss, so bring your own experiences of different software development environments.

How to build a Carrier-Grade Defense-Shield

In this talk, Dr. Antonio Nucci, Chief Technology Officer at Narus Inc, will highlight the major shifts in the security market over the past few years, discuss the dynamics of the security threats and the emerging interest of Internet Service Providers to play a key role in this market. He will also introduce a new preventative technology based on Information Entropy, also known as Carrier-Class Defense-Shield, that will help large high-speed ISP to efficiently defend their network perimeters from the most invasive and deadly DDoS and Worms outbreaks.

Continuous Integration: Benefits, Challenges and Best Practices

Software is a risky business.  Most of the software projects fail because they miss deadlines, cannot stay in budget, or are unable to meet the requirements. Breakage of the code base cause delays and overspending that increases risks of project failure. Continuous integration helps reduce risks of such project failures.

In this talk we'll understand importance of a software build, introduce continuous integration and benefits it provides, discuss ways to avoid challenges associated with bringing it into a software organization and give tips on how to get most from this useful practice.

Attacks on hash functions: Cat 5 storm or a drizzle?

The biggest news in cryptography since the turn of the century is a series of attacks on decade-old standardized hash function, MD5 and SHA-1. Prior to the attacks, the hash functions were used indiscriminately in a gamut of schemes, protocols, and applications.

Some applications of hash functions are still cryptographically sound, some have to go; good alternatives to hash functions in some scenarios exist but are largely unknown to developers and protocol designers.

How to process one million messages per second.

Numerous new applications arising in finance, telecommunications, network management & security, sensor networks, RFID, military, etc. require an ability to process, filter, aggregate, and correlate large numbers of messages (from thousands to hundreds of thousands per second) with very low latency (from milliseconds to seconds). These so called data stream processing application cannot rely on traditional databases, as databases were never designed for these kinds of requirements. A new class of infrastructure, data stream processing engines, has been proposed to help solve this problem. In this talk we'll discuss some data streaming applications, why they cannot rely on traditional databases, the problems arising in processing data streams, and the different approaches to solving this problem, both from academia and from the industry.

Don’t Try This At Home: A Layman’s Guide To Security Vulnerabilities of the Original 802.11 Standard

History of the security of the wireless LAN (WiFi, 802.11)  contains more suspense than an average Hitchcock thriller: exposed weaknesses, bold claims, daring attacks, and a happy 802.11i ending. Presentation will concentrate on the causes behind the security flaws of the basic 802.11 standard, with an emphasis on "design of security features is better left to real professionals". Practical issues, like "how safe is it to have an 802.11 access point at my home / office?" will also be addressed. No background in cryptography is required.

Venture Capital and Nanotechnologies

The nanotechnology is widely believed to be the “next big thing”. In fact, it is an extremely broad term that covers converging area of biotechnology, material science, informatics and metrology. While many practical applications of nanotechnology are coming into our day-to-day life, the major breakthroughs are yet to come.

Nanotech start-ups are popping up but many of them will have hard time to bring their products to the market in the next 3-5 years. Metrological tools and bulk nanomaterials are the closest to the market, but they provide very limited upside for investor community and the founders

Worm Rising

Worm activity is swamping IDS sensors. Smart, dedicated and focused hackers can use worm attacks to their advantage to mask and hide their activity. What's an Information Security team to do to keep an eye both on the storms of activities triggered by the worms and on the activities of a lone hacker who is not triggering that many bells?
